I think the best approach for the kitchen layout is to center the island so you have a natural flow between the stove and the sink. The counter depth makes a difference for how the space feels and I would suggest going with a deeper island if you want seating on one side. The cabinetry style you showed me last week had clean lines that would work well with the overall look. For the backsplash I would recommend something that ties the counter and cabinet colors together without competing for attention. The lighting plan is important especially task lighting over the prep areas. I found that dimmable fixtures give you flexibility for different times of day. You might also want to consider the pantry configuration and whether pull-out shelves would be more practical than fixed shelving. The flooring choice should be durable and easy to clean since that area gets a lot of use. Let me know when you want to go over the final selections together. I have some availability later this week if that works for your schedule.

About the trail route for Saturday I think the path along the creek gives good shade and the elevation is manageable for a casual pace. The distance is about four miles round trip with a few gentle inclines. There is a spot near the midpoint where you can stop and have a snack while looking out over the valley. I would suggest bringing a light jacket because the temperature can drop a bit in the shaded sections. The trail surface is mostly compacted dirt with some roots crossing the path in a few areas. Comfortable footwear with good grip would be helpful. The parking area at the trailhead tends to fill up by mid-morning so arriving earlier would be a good idea. I think you will enjoy the variety of scenery along the way. Let me know if you want to adjust the meeting time or if there is anything else you need help preparing for the outing.
