We finished the porch overhaul last weekend honestly it looks better than we expected. The weather held up just enough for us to get the stain applied before the rain moved in. I'd recommend using a pre-stain wood conditioner if you ever try something similar because the pine soaked it up unevenly in our first test spot. We found that letting it dry for almost 48 hours made a big difference. The old railing was a nightmare to remove because someone painted over pressure treated wood and it had basically fused together. A couple of the balusters were beyond saving but we managed to match the profile at the local lumberyard. Next on the list is redoing the closet shelving in the guest room but that should be a lot simpler since it's just cutting down some melamine boards and adding a few brackets. I can send you the plans if you want to take a look.

I've been testing out that new slow cooker recipe you mentioned and it turned out even better than I thought it would. The trick is definitely browning the meat first even though it adds a few extra steps. I used a chuck roast and let it go for about 8 hours on low the whole house smelled amazing. I threw in some quartered mushrooms and pearl onions about halfway through and they held their shape nicely. Next time I might try adding a splash of fish sauce for extra umami depth without making it taste fishy at all. The gravy was thick enough to coat a spoon right out of the pot. My family crushed it in one sitting. I'm thinking of trying a version with chicken thighs and a little coconut milk to change things up maybe some ginger and star anise to lean into a pho-style broth. Let me know if you have any other go-to recipes that you think could work well in a slow cooker setting.
