I was thinking about the park again, the one with the old oak tree that has the tire swing. The paint on the swing is mostly gone now, just flecks of red clinging to the thick rope. I remember when they first put it up, must have been twenty years ago. My brother pushed me so high I thought I'd touch the clouds. The sound of the leaves rustling in the wind was like the ocean. We'd stay until the streetlights flickered on, a signal from the world that it was time to head home for dinner. The walk back was always quiet, our shoes scuffing against the pavement, the smell of grills from neighboring yards filling the air. It's funny how a simple piece of rope and rubber can hold so much. I went by there last week. The tree is still there, stronger than ever. The swing is too, though the rope is frayed a bit at the top. A couple of kids I didn't recognize were taking turns, their laughter bouncing off the trunks. It was a good sound. I stood for a minute, just watching, before turning back to the car. Some things change, but the important parts, the feeling of a good push and the rush of air, those seem to stay. I should call my brother. See if he remembers that summer. We could meet for coffee, maybe. Talk about something other than work for once.

The workshop was finally quiet. Sawdust hung in the beams of light coming through the high windows, moving slowly like golden fog. I put the plane down on the bench, its metal sole still warm. The smell of cut pine was everywhere, clean and sharp. I ran my hand over the board I'd been working on, feeling for any bumps the shavings had left behind. It was smooth, like stone from a river. Outside, a bird was calling, two notes over and over. I thought about the drawer this would become, part of a small cabinet for the front hall. It would hold keys, maybe some mail. Simple things. My grandfather taught me how to dovetail joints like this. He had endless patience. He'd say the wood talks to you, you just have to listen to what it wants to be. I never understood that when I was young. I wanted to make something fast, something finished. Now, I get it. This piece of pine, it wanted straight lines and a simple purpose. It didn't want to be fancy. I picked up the next board, checking its grain. The bird had stopped calling. The only sound was the soft tick of the cooling stove. I marked my lines with a pencil, the graphite a faint gray against the yellow wood. Another hour of light left. Enough to get the other side done. Then I'd clean up, sweep the fine dust into a pile. There's a rhythm to this that feels like breathing. Measure, mark, cut, smooth. Each step a decision, but a quiet one. No rush. The cabinet will be done when it's done. It'll sit in that hall for years, holding those everyday items, and no one will probably look twice at the joints. But I'll know they're there, tight and strong, holding everything together.
