Oh yeah I completely agree - we ended up taking the train instead of driving and it made the whole trip so much more relaxing. There was this one moment where we passed through a valley with mist just settled between the hills and I swear it looked like a painting. My friend kept saying we should pull over and take photos but you can't exactly pull over a train you know? Anyway the cafe at the station was surprisingly decent. I had a chai latte and a blueberry muffin that was still warm. We sat by the window and watched people rushing around which is always a good reminder to slow down every once in a while. The whole day cost less than what I'd spend on a nice dinner out and I came back feeling genuinely rested. Honestly I think we need to do that more often - just pick a random destination and go with zero planning. It's the spontaneity that makes it stick in your memory.
Let me know if you want the name of that bakery we found near the old town square. Their sourdough was incredible and the woman behind the counter gave us a free cinnamon roll just because we said it was our first time visiting. I'm still thinking about it days later.

I just finished reading that book you mentioned last month and wow I should have started it sooner. The pacing is a little slow in the middle chapters but the ending really pulls everything together in a way I didn't see coming. There is this one scene near the third act where the main character finally confronts something they have been avoiding for years and the writing captures that tension so well I had to put the book down for a minute and just sit with it. I kept thinking about how the author managed to make such a quiet moment feel so huge. I highlighted probably a dozen passages which I almost never do. Also I had no idea there was a sequel coming out next fall - apparently the publisher already announced it but there is no cover reveal yet. I am going to reread the first few chapters now that I know how it ends because I bet there are clues I missed the first time through. Let me know if you want to borrow my copy. I can drop it off this weekend if you are around.
Also I tried that pasta recipe you sent and it turned out way better than I expected. The trick really is letting the garlic brown just a little before adding the tomatoes. I think I finally understand what people mean when they talk about building flavor in layers. Anyway thanks again for the recommendation.
